Welcome to my blog. For you non-techie folks, it is a place for me to spew my thoughts about the USOPHT 2008 campaign to surround and kill the wiley ring necked pheasant. This will be my first trip back to the land of the corn in over a decade and the first time that a dog of mine will play a part in this fun. Hopefully he will play a good part. Why the name "Will This Dog Hunt"? It's not only about a canine. It's about getting together several old dogs with some new dogs and creating some new stories to tell. I must say that I am excited about the the opportunity to hunt again. I went to Bass Pro and looked at weedless pants and boots and shotgun shells and shock collars...for the old dogs. My hope is that we will all be able to get together this year!
Meet Scooby. He's about 10 months old...just a pup in the picture...he's a full breed Vizsla born in the land of corn. Field champion parents and he's been pointing dove, blue jays, cardinals, leaves and butterflies since he was 4 months old. He almost lost his life last night as I bought a retriever dummy for him, covered it in pheasant scent, and threw it for him to retrieve. Now this dog brings back sticks, limbs, tennis balls...you name it. He took that dummy and went straight into the bushes and wouldn't come out. Needless to say and according to Gun Dog, he received negative reinforcement (aka a thrashing). I had to go inside until he came out of his hiding place after the attitude readjustment. We tried it again with the dummy on a training rope (the retriever dummy, not the Vizsla dummy) . He got back on track and retrieved it several times. Well, that's all for my bloggage today. Check back often and comment!
Son of old dog!

As a charter member of the USOPHT I have pretty much seen it all while in the corn and milo stubble of SE Nebraska, as well as some of the local color in the bars of Wilbur, Swanton and Palmyra. The first liar never stood a chance.
While the tales are too numerous and, in today's climate, politically incorrect to recount here, just let me say that there has never been nor ever will be another group like the ORIGINAL USOPHT.
As for the author of this blog, well let's just say he is one of the nicest, and likeable young men to ever have popped a cap on a "young rooster" 30 minutes after sunset!
Affectionately, HB
Looks like the first liar has already spoken...
I am also an original member of the USOPHT and my advice to you for a dog that won't hunt is to punish him by making him sleep in a room with a person who snores very loudly. The snoring causes the dog to have a seizure in the middle of the night and whiz on the snorer's gear. After that...by God, the dog will be fine. He will fit in with the rest of the Bo-hunks in their bunks.
Hey, LP I wasn't aware the jb was a charter member of the USOPHT! I thought it was me, SP, you and HB Jr., am I right? I remember that day on our first hunt along the RR tracks in the COLD rain. Man that was a GREAT morning to hunt!
That was the year we took PC's van and the next year the four of us took my '78 Chevy station wagon. JB wasn't on that hunt either if I remember.
I was thinking of jb as the rookie of the team! kinda a "johnny" come lately!
Even MORE affectionately

We were the first children of the corn. I'm not sure who came up with the USOPHT name. I sure can remember our first visit to the plum thicket! there were only 5 of us...grandpa blocked.
The USOPHT moniker was the brainchild of SP, HP, Shapelli and Timmy, over an extended lunch at Fuddrucker's one bright and sunny day!
Was your Grandad with us at the plum thicket?????? I thought he was only with us when we hunted Wilhelm's place and we got the 3 birds along the waterway!
Boy, you are starting the memeory neurons to firing talking about way back when!
And always remember the Colonel's famous Corp quote, "Pain is Good, Real Pain is REAL Good"!
UUUUUUUH Rah!
HB
That's: "Pain is good, extreme pain is extremely good."
Pardon, Anon!
It HAS been a number of years since I heard you use the expression and I am getting OLD!
Hopefully, you will be able to refresh my memory later this year. However, at this stage of life it doesn't take a lot to get to the EXTREMELY good point!

The question remains..."Will this dog hunt?" I believe the answer is YES! I have worked with this dog with the Gun Dog recommended 'wing on the string' thing. At first, he chased it with the complete belief that he could catch it. Once he got winded, he started locking on point. Now that you have the 'scented' decoys, it is only a matter of time until Scooby gets a shot at the real thing! I bet he will have some competition too. One of the oldest 'dogs' has acquired a 'grey ghost' that should be old enough to join us...if we could just train the old dog......
JB: You can't teach an old dog new tricks, but on the other hand I already know most of them.
