JB and I are looking to get it over to his house. Hopefully we can do that in the next week or so.
We were thinking of painting it camo so the birds won't see us coming. I like the desert camo better than the deep woods camo. Maybe the General can send us the appropriate colors. Here's an example of the colors we chose:
I think it would look "sweet"! I went by Lowes and they already have those colors in a pack of spray paint. I don't want to spray paint it...it would look better with a real sprayer. I will try to get my sprayer back from the old dog.
I don't know how Scooby is going to feel about riding in the dog trailer. He may bark all the way, like D.O.G. used to do when we left him in the box. Anyway, we're ready to get started.
I exchanged emails with a Nun today who is interested in blessing our daily activities. It's always good to have a Nun with you on the hunt when you need to pray or to bless the field before the hunt. I'll give you more details from the church as they become available.
65 days until opening day!

LP,
I was able to locate the three shades of flat brown that we discussed for the trailer at the Commerce Hardware store. I have an air gun sprayer and I recommend we do the front box and the rims with the same camo finish as the dog box. I think that the camo finish will definitely prevent the birds from exiting the fields when we drive up. Especially if they can't see the trailer from the background. I think we agree also that eliminating any "shine" or "sparkle" will cut down on startling the birds.
Camo? You've gotta be kidding!
fLP,
A neighbor of mine used the same camo finish on his truck. He claims that it is so effective, he has lost his truck several times after a morning deer hunt. He also says that the deer will walk right up next to his truck. They got so close one time that he shot out his rear window while trying to bag the buck. I told him that he should open his window BEFORE he shoots.
jb: Your neighbor shouldn't be drinking so early in the morning.
Also, deer aren't afraid of a vehicle no matter what color it is. On the other hand, Nebraska pheasants are probably smarter than Georgia deer. I heard of a case last season where a cock stole a guy's camo pickup. The hunter had the keys with him, but the cock hot-wired the truck.
JB,
I found a great article about painting camo. Great instructions and tips for buying paint. I'll get the link and add it here. Pretty interesting and it does speak of the reflective surfaces on most dog trailers (and cars for that matter) and the affect on birds. Pretty interesting.
Thanks, LP,
As you can see from the latest pictures of the trailer, we won't need much paint since the chicken house dust has already taken the gloss off the existing paint. As we said before, we just need to touch up the clean spots.
LP, I think the camo idea is GREAT! However, I disagree with the selection of "desert" camo. While there are some similiarities to the habitat of "the wily cock pheasant" it isn't close enough to really do an effective job of hiding the trailer from the birds. I have been researching camo hunting coats in the Cabela's catalog and it would seem that a combo of "wetlands" and "desert" camo would be perfect to hide in the milo stubble and corn fields of SE Nebraska.
Wish I lived closer it would be fun to help get the old trailer up and running again. One thing to be sure to do is re-pack the wheel bearings, or maybe even replace them if they look bad. The dust and grit of Otoe County can ruin a set of improperly sealed and lubricated bearings!

Oh, JB you need to tell your neighbor that it is illegal to shoot out of a moving or parked vehicle on the right of way!

To eliminate the risk of damaging the trailer, I was able to retrieve it from the chicken house and place it on a utility trailer for transporting. It is now parked beside its own garage. It has gotten a quick rinse. Now that the dust has been removed, I have assessed the condition. Other than a definite need for new tires and the interior of every department including the gun box area appears the same as it did on the last hunt. The gun box is still carpeted the pale blue. The cargo box still has the cherry wood ammo containers hanging from leather straps. Everything has been kept dry the entire time. There was even a pheasant tail feather in the gun box and 3 empty beer cans in the cargo box. Talk about an invitation for a return trip....
JB, is the "false bottom" intact and the custom opening hook still available?
We need to have a safe, secure spot for any "young roosters" taken in the 30 minutes prior to sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset. Or, anytime during the day!
As of now I am planning to go with you guys, would like Hugh to go but he is short handed at work and doesn't have the necessary vacation. He is learning the hard way the management is "hell"!
I recently purchased a new 12ga Remington pump that will shoot 2 3/4, 3 and 3 1/2" shells. Haven't fired it yet but if you guys are shoot some clay targets before you go out I would like to attend the gathering!
Also, could we utilize some 2 way pocket radios on the hunt? I have 2 we bought several years ago to keep track of Jane while shopping at the large outdoor antique shows in Ohio and Mass, we attended.

JB, I think I still have a couple of the small American flag decals that are on the back of the trailer if you want them. It would certainly spruce up the camo paint job and let everyone who saw it tha Barack Obama wasn't in the vehicle towing the trailer!
And remember dahlig, "Pain is good, EXTREME pain is EXTREMELY good"!

I am very pleased to announce that the "young rooster" bottom is still intact and the meticulously designed "hook" is still there as well. Yes, I would like to replace the small flags. The ones there now are very faded. Also, I have access to four additional walkie talkies with microphone headsets that we could use. I know that we will be doing some clay pigeon practice soon. We will let you know when and where for that. Now, I have a comment from Laura....
Given the advanced "experience" of certain hunters, I have composed a theme song for you..."Blocking from a Hover-Round". Enjoy your trip...Laura
JB, your wife has lost none of her acerbic wit!
I only hope she is including SP in the hover round music, as he is 6 months OLDER than I!
Hopefully the team will pitch SP and I a birthdat bash at the 5th Quarter (if it is still in Palmyra) with some flaming hookers and "rooster fries"!
My birthday will fall 6 days priour to opening day and I expect the proper amount of R-E-S-P-E-C-T from the "younger team members!
I will try and locate the flag decals, as they are buried somewhere in my desk.
Will appreciate a call or note regarding the "clay" shoot. I need to try out my new Remington Express Magnum 12 guage.
UUUUUUUUUUU Rah!
Pain is GOOD, EXTREME pain is EXTREMELY GOOD!

HB,
I have a friend with 300 acres of land about an 45 minutes from my house that wants to shoot clay pigeons with us because he just bought a new over and under shotgun for the trip. He called me yesterday and wants us to come up there asap for some practice. He can be free Thursday thru Saturday usually. Lenny wants to join us. I have throwers. Hand-held and ground mounted.
