As they say in the old country..."it don't get no better dan dis." I believe that the extremely rigorous schedule you have laid out for us will be maintained as is. UUUUUUHHHH RRRRAAAHHH!

Troopers,

I have no illusions that "old dog" will be, as he has so many times before", as harsh a task master as ever. But I would like to know at what time we will require wakening to arrive at the hunding field in Wahoo NE, at the prescribed hour to be in position when the LEGAL shooting time arrives! I estimate somewhere around "triple zero dark thirty"

However, all the above aside, I have a question to put before the team? What OR where in the hell is Green Glade?

I presume it to be the name of the McCown goat, milk and cheese corporation in Martelle, NE. Am I correct?

Also, I am not as sure of an "early" arrival on 10/24 for the Georgia contingent, as "old dog" and some others of the team seem to be? However, I will take a wait and see attitude on our arrival time at Green Glade, giving careful consideration to the zeal and elan of the other team members making the trip from Georgia.

The equipmend pile is mounting and the time near on choosing what shipping container will be necessary to haul it.

Otherwise I am, as I am sure most of the rest of you are, READY to HUND (at least one field)!

As far as the steaks are concerned, I have had very good success when I buy an entire ribeye or NY strip and cut it myself. It is usually about 4 or 5 dollars less per pound and I get to choose the thickness. Just an idea...

HB,
David tells me that he has a waterproof bag of some sort that will hold all of the bags in the back of his truck. I have not seen it, but it is probably big enough...and I think he has two of them. Also, we have the front box of the dog trailer that will haul all of our hunting supplies, ammo, bird cleaning, dog food stuff...etc. We should also figure out the beverage/ice containers for the trip. I have no doubt that we will have room for everything...It is a pretty big truck. jb

HB,

According to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the official civil twilight sunrise for Wahoo, NE on October 25, 2008 will be 7:21am with the official sunrise at 7:49am. Sunset twilight on that day is 6:58pm. If we allow a 45 to 50 minute transport time, that would mean leaving the Martel Motel @ Greenglade by about 6:30am. Daylight savings time will actually be to our advantage during the hund.

I agree that DST will work to our advanatage, but knowing "old dog" as I do he will have use up at 4AM Nebraska Land Daylight Time. Which, by my definition is "triple zero dark thirty"!

I think he has a bad back and doesn't sleep well nights!

The pile is BIG and getting bigger by the day!

Looking forward to Thursday!

2 days and a wake up! UUUUUUUUUUUH RAH!

Bill H. and I will visit the Wahoo site on the way back from Omaha after I pick him up from his flight. We'll determine drive time from the Wahoo field to
Greenglade on the return. I'm thinking it will be at least an hour. Regarding steaks, I usually have the butcher at Ideal Grocery cut my steak to order,(T bone or Porterhouse 1 3/8" to 1 1/2" thick.) However, if y'all decide on a slab of ribeyes or New York strips, that's fine too. As to arrival time, we'll be checking with you to monitor your progress. If it looks like you'll be coming in late, we'll pick up the steaks and charge you an exorbitant price when you get here.

According to the National Weather Service, it is supposed to SNOW this Thursday night at the honey hole in Wahoo. However, Saturday...sunny and 62 for the high... Sounds like Nebraska Fall weather to me. We might have better luck storm chasing than bird chasing...Either way, I hope the "old dogs" have chains for their HOV R ROUNDS....or is it a "RASCAL?"

My HOV R ROUND has four wheel drive and a winch. However, the snow will be gone by Saturday, since temps will be above freezing most of the time and only a light snowfall is expected in the eastern end of the state. Shirtsleeve weather in Nebraska.

The only thing I remember about weather in Nebraska after a snow melt is M U D. Thick and sticky. It will pull your boots clean off your feet if you are not careful. But, the real advantage is to the dogs...snow melt increases humidity which increses pheasant scent and that increases our chances a BUNCH. SP, while you guys are scoping the Honey Hole, you might want to determine the predicted wind direction so you can put Bubba on the ground headed upwind...that worked very well when we were in Hartington, NE and got our limit before 9am. Like President Bush says...we have to have the right "strategery"! And I am not being political...

Google maps says it is just over 9 hours to St. Louis. I figure we can make the trip in 8, so leaving at 2:30 puts us in St. Louis at 10:30 (9:30 Central). If we can push it to Columbia, it is about another 2 hours so say 11:30 central. There are quite a few hotels in Columbia. If we can do that, we have an easy 4-5 hour drive into Lincoln which would get us there at lunchtime and enable us to get to the store and other fooling around. Thoughts?

JB,

Yeah, I remember hunding in the snow that day at the farm when Corky's truck got stuck in the mud at the bottom of the hill. I remember VERY VIVIDLY seeing the mud stuck to your boots while you were standing on top of the hill by the house and watching SP, Mi Coronel, Shapelli, Timmy and me, push the truck UP the hill in the mud! I also remember your lame a$$ excuse for not helping. You were "afraid Sinbad might develop hypothermia"!

LP, your plan sound doable to me. But remember you gotta factor in pit stops and dinner somewhere along the way. If we do it like the other times we can combine stops when we fuel, hopefully David's truck doesn't have auxillary tanks that give it a 1000mile range without refueling!

One day and a wake up!

I will have to leave MY Hover Round at home, as the battery needs replacing and we won't have room for it and all my other "stuff" in the truck!

St. Louis is about 6 or 7 hours from Lincoln. If you think you might stay in Columbia, it would be a good idea to see if Missouri is playing in town that weekend. If so, there might not be any motel rooms. If you stay in the St. Louis area, I'd recommend staying in St. Charles which is just across the river to the west of St. L. There are at least two motels there which aren't too bad. Len, you may remember staying there as a kid. They had a big video game area. As I recall, the best motel was on the north side of I 70 at the St. Charles exit. Staying in St. Charles when you're heading west gets you out of the St. Louis morning rush. Whatever you do, don't, repeat, DON'T, stay in East St. Louis (unless you have a death wish or enjoy drive-by shootings and gun battles).

I am with Lenny about driving as far as we can Thursday.

I checked the U of Missouri scheduale and they play Colorado for homecoming on the 25th. I would not think all the motels would be booked Thursday night, maybe Friday and Saturday nights, but not Thursday.

Also, the same thing happened to use when we took our trip West and when we tried to get a room in Columbia coming home all the motels were full because of nursing school commencement. We just drove 30 or 40 miles and found a "lonsome" hotel at one of the interstste interchanges. It isn't like we have to find a 5 Star accomodation. As long as it it clean and pest free, a bed is a bed!

I agree that getting to the west side of St Louis would be the best thing to do. As long as it is not a "no tell, motel" we should be fine.

Troopers,

Shapelli just left after dropping off his "bullets" (although not very many), his "bullet shooters" (3)and his, oops, OUR refreshments for the trip out tomorrow and Friday AM. I guess we will have to develope a taste for Scotch Whiskey real quick unless we drink his brandy, but since he only has one bottle that won't last too long!

Things are coming together nicely here, packing should be complete later today or this evening and "old dog" 2 will be ready to depard for the land of the wily cock pheasant!

I hope the reconnaisance of the objective in Wahoo proves to be as positive as we have been led to hope it will be.

The rest of the team is relying on the objectivity and training of Mi Coronel to correctly evaluate and report out on the hunding possibilities of the site. Old Dog 1 sometimes tends to embellish the actual facts, painting a more "rosy" picture than actually exists!

However, time will tell who is correct, 'cause the proof of quality is in the hunding!

I had hoped to have my Hover Round ready for this trip but the necessary all terrain upgrades, new battery packs and fuel cell power conversion will not be installed in time for this hund, perhaps for the January duck hunt!

And, one last word to "trailer boy" and his lovely, though somewhat "acerbic", bride. "You shouldn't make fun of "old dogs", "cause if you do God will GET YOU!(or maybe even an "old dog")

...I thought it was a RASCAL!

At least I know that I will have company when I get old...

Let's see, the limit is three pheasants per person per day...with four days huntin, I guess I should bring 12 rounds...save my shots for the glass with ice in it...right....NOT!!!!

Packing is done here and the "dog box smugglers" will be hittin the highway about 1pm tomorrow. Just to help wid de hund, Laura sewed a nice red and white target on the back of my coat. She says "it will help with their aim." I don't know what she means by that...
